About

I’m Steven Howard and I’ve been a journalist in the Ann Arbor media market since graduating from Eastern Michigan University in 2003 with a four-year journalism degree.

There have been a few brief stretches where I dabbled in other professional interests, such as the two years I spent teaching college English composition. I’ve also done basic grant writing, too.

Personally, I’m an avid history buff and photography enthusiast, with the two hobbies often meshing nicely.

I’m a dad, a husband and a proud dog owner to a pug named Ernest.

Skills:

Journalism 2003 to current:
I have written and reported for every major media outlet in Washtenaw County since graduating from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in December of 2003. I currently freelance for The Saline Post, covering general interest news and the local board of education. While working as primary reporter for The Saline Reporter, beginning in 2010, I covered many events and programs at the Saline District Library, coming to know the staff and patrons very well.

Library science 2008 to 2010:
The Ann Arbor District library hired me in February of 2008 as a circulation clerk, eventually promoting me to desk clerk in 2009. In this role, I helped patrons locate and check out materials, offered advice as to how to use those materials to their full advantage, assisted in opening and closing the building on specified shifts, balanced a crash drawer used for collecting fines, prepared deposits for the bank, and maintained oversight of the library building and grounds for any situations that could potentially risk the safety of staff or patrons,

Teaching 2005 to 2007:
As a graduate instructor of English composition at Eastern Michigan University, I taught and managed classes of up to 20 college freshmen per course section, with a significant portion of the curriculum being teaching students how to use the school library’s massive and complex resources to maximum efficacy in pursuit of their unique academic interests.

Education:

Eastern Michigan University1999 to 2007
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, August 1999 to December 2003

Master’s degree in literature with an emphasis on American authors writing between approximately 1850 and 1950, course of study complete with A average. Thesis work ongoing.
